A letter returned, and the diary that answered it
“Endereço Desconhecido”✦Portugal✦1954✦2 fragments
In 1954 a letter left Porto for a woman in Aveiro and came back stamped 'address unknown.' Her diary, found decades later, shows she had moved three streets away. Two fragments of one near-miss, reunited on the Atlas.

The letter he sent
Returned unopened, Campanhã station, Porto · Spring, 1954
Amélia,
Enough going around it. On the 2nd, in the afternoon, I'll be at Campanhã station, on platform 2, and I'll wait for the four o'clock train, and the five, and the six if I have to.
I have nothing to offer you but work and a country I haven't yet seen. Bring only what fits in one case. Come to me.
If you don't come, I'll know you thought better of it, and I won't write to you again.

Her diary
A diary left behind, Aveiro · Spring, 1954
Aveiro, April 1954
A month. Nothing. A man who crosses the whole country every week can't find a single stamp?
Then it wasn't what I thought — or I wasn't. He left without a word. Let it be so.
